In the everlasting war between the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants, there are very few who can match strength with the mutant known as Colossus.  Let’s take a closer look at the Sideshow Collectibles Colossus statue.

Sculpt & Design 3 out of 5 Stars

Simplicity is the word of the day as it pertains to this piece. Working from the base up, Colossus stands upon a circular base, which represents the floor of the X-Mansion’s infamous Danger Room. His right foot steps atop a crushed spiked wrecking ball, one of the many deadly machinations for which the Danger Room is known for.

Colossus’ pose is somewhat simplistic. With his left foot planted behind him, he steps atop the aforementioned spiked ball.  His stance is that of someone posturing for a fight, indicating that the true danger lies just ahead.  With his arms to his side, his fists clenched, and his chest out front, Colossus is clearly ready to absorb whatever danger approaches him.

Colossus is wearing a variation of his classic X-Men costume. (a tried and true look for him) The design quality of his boots is splendid.  The sculptor took the time to add in wrinkles and folds on the boots, as well as the cloth trunks and shirt.  Colossus is also sporting an epic pair of gauntlets on his arms, almost reminiscent of that of Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor gauntlets.  The classic ‘X’ symbol on his belt buckle is also well-defined.

It must be said that this statue is absolutely “colossal.” This statue is 22” tall and weighs in a 46 lbs.  Not only that, but Colossus has a very well-sculpted musculature. That coupled with his posturing stance make him look like an absolute hulking mass of muscle and steel.  He has well-defined bicep, ab, and chest muscles.

The exclusive version of this sculpture includes Kitty Pride’s famous dragon companion Lockheed, who sits upon Colossus’ shoulder, giving him a slightly more menacing look. (Meet the “Daddy of Dragons.”) The pointed horns, teeth, and nails of Lockheed are well-sculpted and greatly show the powerful and deadly nature of the creature.

+ The costume design is great.

+ Muscle and definition details are on-point

– Somewhat bland display base

– Simplistic design leaves a lot to be desired for some.

Paint3.5 out of 5 Stars

The paint on this statue is quite well done.  The simplicity of Colossus’ design actually helps the paint job really stand out.  The base of the statue is a fairly simple shade of black, with some striking blue grid lines upon the Danger Room floor.  The crushed spiked wrecking ball looks excellent, with some prominent silver shading.

The metallic coloring of Colossus’ body looks like an actual steel structure due to the wisely chosen silver shading. The use of a darker silver shading on the inner area of his biceps actually enhances his muscular structure.

Even the eye coloring of this massive mutant is enough to strike fear and panic in the X-Men’s enemies.  The silver paint strokes across his forehead embolden his metallic face with a terrifying scowl that would send the Brotherhood of Mutants into a full-scale retreat.

The use of the yellows and dark reds within his costume work mostly well together.  The paint work compliments the magnificence of this sculpture, and also helps to define the extraordinary muscular structure and physique of Colossus.  The golden ‘X’ on his belt buckle pops quite nicely.

With his reddish tongue and yellow eyes, the purple dragon Lockheed compliments Colossus well in the exclusive version of this piece. The beautifully colored grey horns and white teeth are enough to give his opponents chills.

+ Great use of shading

+ Silver paint on skin definitely has a steel look to it

– Simplicity of colors leaves something to be desired for some

Value – 4 out of 5 Stars

This Colossus statue is self-descriptive, in that it is absolutely colossal.  With the exclusive version coming in at $695, and the regular version rounding out at $680, you really can’t go wrong with either one.  Obviously, this statue is pricier than some of the other Sideshow Collectibles due to its massive size.  However, this version of Colossus serves as an excellent center piece (and therefore a great starting point if its your first Sideshow Collectibles statue) if you’re looking to start your collection of X-Men.
